Wishful Thinking

Desk Folk

I was at my sister’s college orientation the other day and noticed something I found fairly amusing.  There was this guy sitting at a desk on the phone writing something down.  I didn’t think much of it as people do that rather often at work.  What I didn’t know is that desk wasn’t his, in fact, he didn’t even work at the university.  So when a university employee came up to him and said, “did you not see the sign that says authorized personnel only?” I giggled a little bit.  It’s not as if this was just a blank desk among many sitting around like you see at the library, no this desk had things on it, with a phone and drawers, presumably filled.  But this guy just thought he was good enough to use it anyways.  Granted, we’ve all taken liberties in our time.  Be it using a bathroom we weren’t supposed to, borrowing our neighbors electric while they were on vacation (I haven’t but I should) or playing on someone’s Xbox when they weren’t around we’ve all done it.  But looking at the situation from the 3rd person made me realize A.) How rude we actually are and B.) how unnecessarily upset we get about it.  Well, for most things at least, if someone used my toothbrush to clean between their toes I’d be pretty upset.

Maybe it’s just that things kind of suck around here right now and I’m looking for good in people and only finding things that annoy me or maybe it’s simply true that we don’t have enough respect for each other anymore.  Either way, it was still kind of funny to see a business man with his Blackberry wearing a Rolex and Italian shoes get bossed around by a little old lady that probably shops at Wal-Mart, oh I love balance.
